Born at Barkly West in 1875. BW is a town in Griqualand West, 35 kms from Kimberley on the banks of the Vaal River. Founded in 1870 as a diamond diggers' camp under the name of Klipdrift. For a short while was capital of "Diggers" Republic of Griqualand West, before annexation by the Crown. Became the main center of a line of alluvial River Diggings.
