William Alexander Dunn

GREAT MAN

Great MAN !
William Alexander Dunn was born 15 September, 1891 in Provo, Utah to Harriet Emily Wilkins and William Fielding Dunn.He was the 3rd child-the first son of a family of 2 girls and 4 boys. His childhood was spent in Provo, Utah.
He attended the Brigham Young Academy. Here he met the sweetheart of his life, Hazel May Ellertson. He often told the story how he went into a class room and saw this beautiful dark haired girl, Hazel. As he passed by her, he said to her--"I'll be seeing You! They were married on 22 May, 1912.
They moved to Salt Lake City. He was very good with math and became the Secretary and Treasurer for the Park City Utah mines. He was doing well financially when the "Crash" came in 1929. They lost everything. This didn't in the least daunt his happy fun ways. He started over running a service station etc. etc. In later years he was the office manager for the Ford Motor Company in S.L.C. He helped in the business he and his sons started on the property next to the Ford Company on about 55 W. 5th S. This was where they had the best Drive In and restaurant in Salt Lake City called "William A's".
The following is a briet history written when he was made President of the Salt Lake Chapter of the Sons of the Utah Pioneers.- "William A. [Bill] Dunn, congenial, energetic, religious and civic worker and of the "Four Horsemen".
His interest in Boy Scout activities dated from his early life. He together with President George Albert Smith [President of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day-Saints] and 4 others, were the first to receive the Silver Beaver Award in the State of Utah.
For many years Bill's interests were shared by three others, Joe Newton, Mack Woolley and Gus Kirk. Beginning In 1928, these four men played handball together. Quite regularly their wives met them after their games for dinner. Because of their close association the men became affectionately known as the "Four Horsemen". This close association led to other activities. On Christmas Eve they met every year at the Newton home. Following dinner Bill dressed characterizing a perfect Santa Claus, which he had been doing for over ten years before. Starting their rounds they visited scores of homes until the early hours of the morning. Bill knocked at the doors and the other 3 Horsemen stood outside gazing through the windows noting the ecstasy and the joyous reactions of the children. As Santa Claus Bill visited children's hospitals bringing happiness and Christmas cheer to as many as 1,000 children in a single year. One will never know the great amount of joy and happiness Bill Dunn has brought into the hearts of thousands of children in this community. [He is still doing it to this day]" End of quote--written in 1969.
He had the most outstanding Boy Scout Troop at the National Boy Jambree
For the 4th of July celebrations in the 1960's he was "Fourth of July Cavalcade" chairman. He organized the events of that day. The main one was the Cavalcade Fireworks Show presented as a Patriotic Observance at Derks Field in S.L. He loved riding in the 24th of July parades.
He was much loved by many but loved most by his own family. He was a great husband, father, father-in-law and grandfather.
Hazel proceeded him in death by about a year and a half. he died at the age of 89.

Hazel May Ellertson

Hazel May Ellertson Dunn, 88, of Salt Lake City, Utah, died Monday in Pocatello following and illness [Colon Cancer]
She was born Jan 11, 1891 at Mona, Utah to Ephraim and Lona Swasey Ellertson. She had 3 brothers and 5 sisters.
When she was a little girl, her father was called on a mission to New Zealand. Later, when Hazel and her sisters were old enough to attend BYU Academy in Provo, her father sold his business and farm in Mona and the family moved to Provo. She attended Brigham Young University (Academy) and met her "Bill" there. He always told the story that he went into a class room and saw this beautiful dark haired girl and as he past by her, he said to her----- " I'LL be seeing You!"----
He was working in Salt Lake City when he wrote to her on January 1912 on a PENNY post card addressed to Miss Hazel Ellertson 460 East 5th North Provo, City.
"Dear Hazel, I cant imagine why I didn't get a letter from you today. Guess it does get sorta monotonous writing to much. Hope I get one tomorrow. Will just have to wait and look for it again. Well, I hope you are well and happy. As ever, Billy x x x x ."
On May 22, 1912 she married William [Bill] A. Dunn in the Salt Lake LDS Temple. She was a wonderful mother and cared for and loved her children very much.
When the "CRASH" came in 1931 They lost their beautiful home and all their savings etc. She never did get over this loss. She always treasured her barrell diamond, one treasure that they didn't have to sell. [altho they had to pawn it sometimes.]
In her youth, she was active in drama and music and was a frequent performer as vocalist and piano accompanist..
She was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day-Saints. She served as Primary President and teacher, music director and choir member and other callings. She performed in ward and stake dramas and musicals.
I remember many times her singing and playing the piano in her front room at 1866 South 16th East in Salt Lake City where they lived the last part of their lives.
