Reeler Family Tree - Selected Families and Individuals

Notes

Gunnar Thorsson Mr

Gunnar Thorsson was a merchant (Shopkeeper) in Varberg, Sweden, in the early 1700's.
Gunnar's son Nils took the family name Grimbeck (up until this time people living in Sweden used their father's first name as their surname, e.g. my full name would be Wade Scott Bryansson (as I am the son of Bryan), and my sister's name would be Tracy Bryansdotter (as she is the daughter of Bryan). This method of identification is still used in Iceland today). The Swedish government decided that in order to keep accurate record of individuals, each family would have to use a common name for purposes of identification, hence...Grimbeck (as chosen by Nils Gunnarsson). Nils' brothers decided to take the family name Grimbeck too. Gunnar Thorsson's wife's name is unknown.

Nils Gunnarsson Grimbeck Mr

Took the family name Grimbeck, as did his brothers.
He studied at the university in Lund 1728. (unclear if that is theyear he started his universities studies or the only year he spentin Lund). Became priest in 1733.
He became a priest and was "Komminister" i.e. assistant pastor inLandvetter 1742.
His wife:Christina Maria Sperringhs born around 1714 passed away atthe Admirality Dockyard in Gothenburg 17 August 1789.

Johan Georg Gunnarsson Grimbeck Mr

Had three children, all of whom were too young to fend for themselves at the time of his death, and were therefore placed in care of uncle Anton. (according to church protocol 1774). One daughter married according to the church records 1774 to the goldsmith in Varberg, Sven Nyman. Johan was a student at the University in Lund 1740. Master of Theology 1754. Pastor in Vargberg 1759. Married same year.

Edsard Adolf Grimbeek Dr

Edsard Adolph Grimbeck of Varberg, Sweden, was Opper-Meester on the "Mearmin" when he was appointed surgeon of the Company's Slave Lodge at the Cape in 1786. (Cape Archives (80, pl385). THIS WAS THE BEGINNINGOF THE GRIMBEEK FAMILY IN SOUTH AFRICA.
When this post was abolished in 1792 he became a burgher surgeon in Cape Town, claiming by 1803 a "large practice in this place" and performing post-mortem examinations for the Court of Justice (Cape Archives BR82 p93). Memorial to Janssens (updated). In 1803 he protested as an established practitioner, against his omission from the Batavian "Vaccination Commissie". General Janssen referred the letter to the Genees Kundige Commissie and the Commitee' replied that not all Cape Practitioners had been included anyway. An interesting development arising from the protest was the Commissie's decision to allow other Cape practitioners to vaccinate properly. They were then granted an Acten van Admissie. Permission to vaccinate was withheld from "such as possess no Diploma or Testimonial from any qualified person or College. (Cape Archivesb073 p308). This was the first attempt to sort the grain from the chaff in the Cape Medical Profession. (From the History of Medicine in South Africa - by Edmund Burrows).
Edsard Adolf met and married a Dutch girl, and therefore changed his surname to a more acceptable one to his in-laws. Since this change occurred, the surname is spelt in three different ways, i.e. Grimbeck, Grimbeek and Grimbeeck, although all of these are directly related.
